Ingredients

  • 4 whole Bosc pears
  • 4 cups Water
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 whole Lemon
  • 1 stick Cinnamon stick
  • 1 whole Vanilla bean
  • 4 pieces Whole cloves
  • 1 whole Star anise

Directions

Step 1

Peel the Bosc pears, leaving the stems intact. Gently core the pears from the bottom using a small melon baller or a teaspoon. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large saucepan, combine the water and granulated sugar. Stir gently over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely.

Step 3

Slice the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the pot. Add the lemon halves as well for extra flavor.

Step 4

Split the vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape out the seeds using the back of a knife. Add both the seeds and the pod to the saucepan.

Step 5

Add the cinnamon stick, whole cloves, and star anise to the liquid.

Step 6

Bring the liquid to a gentle simmer over medium heat, ensuring it does not reach a full boil.

Step 7

Once the poaching liquid is ready, carefully add the peeled pears. Lower the heat to maintain a gentle simmer and cover the saucepan with a lid.

Step 8

Allow the pears to poach for 25 to 30 minutes, occasionally turning them gently with a spoon. The pears should be tender but not mushy, easily pierced with a knife.

Step 9

Once cooked, remove the pears using a slotted spoon and let them cool to room temperature or chill in the fridge before serving.

Step 10

Reduce the poaching liquid by simmering it gently without the lid for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened. Strain the liquid to remove the spices and lemon halves.

Step 11

Serve each pear on a dessert plate, drizzled with some of the reduced syrup. Optionally, garnish with a bit of fresh mint or a sprinkle of finely chopped nuts.
