Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups low sodium beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the sliced onions and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are deeply caramelized and golden brown.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic to the onions and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring constantly for 2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.

Step 5

Gradually pour in the low sodium broth while continuing to stir constantly to avoid lumps, and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 6

Once simmering, add Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, dried thyme, black pepper, and salt into the gravy.

Step 7

Lower the heat and let the gravy simmer gently for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the gravy has thickened.

Step 8

Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed.

Step 9

Serve the onion gravy hot over your favorite dishes such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or meats.
