Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 4 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 28 ounces Crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Red pepper flakes
  • 0.25 cup Fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 0.5 cup Water

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the minced garlic and chopped onion. Sauté for about 3 minutes, until the onion becomes translucent and the garlic is fragrant, being careful not to let the garlic burn.

Step 3

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes to the pot. Stir to combine.

Step 4

Pour in the water and add the sugar, then stir again until the ingredients are well mixed.

Step 5

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and then reduce the heat to low.

Step 6

Let the sauce simmer uncovered for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 7

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with additional salt, pepper, or red pepper flakes if desired.

Step 8

Stir in the fresh basil just before serving to retain its bright flavor.

Step 9

Serve over your choice of cooked pasta or use as a base for other Italian dishes.
