Ingredients

  • 4 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup raisins (optional)
  • 0.25 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

Wash and core each apple using an apple corer or a paring knife, making sure to remove all seeds and core material while leaving about a half-inch at the bottom of the apple intact.

Step 3

In a small bowl, mix together the ground cinnamon, honey or maple syrup, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.

Step 4

Place the cored apples in a baking dish, ensuring they are evenly spaced.

Step 5

If desired, fill the center of each apple with raisins and/or chopped nuts.

Step 6

Evenly drizzle the cinnamon mixture over the cores of the apples and inside them. You may also brush the outer skins lightly with the mixture for extra flavor.

Step 7

Pour the cup of water into the bottom of the baking dish around the apples, which will help to steam and soften them during baking.

Step 8

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, sealing the edges tightly to create a steaming environment.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes.

Step 10

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork and are slightly golden.

Step 11

Allow the apples to cool slightly before serving.
