Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 0.5 cup low-fat buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup hot water
  • 0.25 cup dark chocolate chips (optional, for topping)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and lightly flour an 8-inch round cake pan, or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the unsweetened applesauce and granulated sugar until well combined.

Step 4

Add the eggs one at a time to the applesauce mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 5

Alternately add the flour mixture and the low-fat buttermilk to the wet ingredients. Begin and end with the flour mixture, mixing just until combined.

Step 6

Carefully stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth. Be gentle not to overmix.

Step 7

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread it evenly with a spatula.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out with a few moist crumbs.

Step 9

If desired, sprinkle dark chocolate chips over the cake immediately after removing it from the oven, allowing them to melt slightly.

Step 10

Let the cake cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes, then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely before serving.
