Ingredients

  • 500 grams potatoes
  • 100 grams lean ground chicken
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 small carrot
  • 2 stalks green onion
  • 0.5 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 as needed cooking spray

Directions

Step 1

Peel and chop the potatoes into small chunks. Place them in a large pot of salted water and bring them to a boil. Cook until the potatoes are tender and can be easily pierced with a fork, about 15 minutes.

Step 2

While the potatoes are cooking, finely chop the onion, garlic, and carrot. Thinly slice the green onions.

Step 3

In a non-stick skillet, spray a little cooking spray and sauté the onion, garlic, and carrot over medium heat until the onion is translucent and the carrot is softened, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 4

Drain the boiled potatoes and mash them in a large bowl using a potato masher or fork until smooth.

Step 5

Add the cooked onion mixture, lean ground chicken, green onions, ground black pepper, and salt to the mashed potatoes. Mix until well combined.

Step 6

Shape the mixture into small patties, about 5 cm in diameter, and set aside.

Step 7

Beat the egg in a shallow bowl. Lightly dip each patty in the egg, allowing any excess to drip off.

Step 8

Preheat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and lightly spray with cooking spray.

Step 9

Cook the patties in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry each patty for about 3–4 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through.

Step 10

Serve the bergedil hot, as a side dish or a snack. Enjoy the low-fat version of this Malaysian delight!
