Ingredients

  • 500 grams lean beef sirloin
  • 200 grams non-fat plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 3 units garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 as needed olive oil spray
  • 4 units whole wheat pita breads
  • 2 units sliced tomatoes
  • 1 unit sliced cucumbers
  • 1 unit sliced red onions
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 4 units lettuce leaves
  • 4 tablespoons low-fat tahini sauce

Directions

Step 1

Slice the beef sirloin into thin strips about 1/4 inch thick.

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine the non-fat plain yogurt, lemon juice, ground cumin, ground coriander, ground paprika, ground cinnamon, ground turmeric, minced garlic, salt, and ground black pepper.

Step 3

Add the beef strips to the marinade, ensuring they are well-coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best flavor.

Step 4

Preheat a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly spray with olive oil.

Step 5

Remove the beef from the marinade, shaking off excess, and cook in batches in the hot skillet. Sauté for about 5-6 minutes or until browned and cooked through.

Step 6

Warm the whole wheat pita breads in a dry skillet or oven.

Step 7

Assemble the shawarmas: Lay each pita flat, add a lettuce leaf, then distribute the cooked beef evenly among the pitas.

Step 8

Top with sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, chopped parsley, and a drizzle of low-fat tahini sauce.

Step 9

Roll up the pita to enclose the filling and serve immediately.
