Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean or higher)
  • 1 cup cremini or white button mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 0.5 medium onion, finely grated or minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg white
  • 0.25 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil (for greasing the pan)
  • 4 pieces whole wheat burger buns
  • 4 pieces lettuce leaves
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 0 optional condiments (mustard, ketchup, etc.)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped mushrooms, onion, garlic, egg white, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.

Step 2

Using clean hands or a wooden spoon, mix the ingredients until well incorporated. Be careful not to overmix, as this could make the burgers tough.

Step 3

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form each portion into a patty about 3/4 inch thick. Use your thumb to make a slight indentation in the center of each patty; this helps them cook evenly.

Step 4

Heat a large non-stick skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Lightly grease the pan with olive oil using a paper towel.

Step 5

Cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until they are fully cooked and reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). Avoid pressing down on the patties to retain their juices.

Step 6

While the patties cook, toast the burger buns lightly in a toaster or on a grill, if desired.

Step 7

Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by a cooked patty and a slice of tomato. Add optional condiments and the top half of the bun.

Step 8

Serve the burgers immediately with your favorite side dish, such as a garden salad or baked sweet potato fries.
