Ingredients

  • 500 g Ground pork
  • 250 g Ground chicken
  • 1 large Egg
  • 3 tbsp Almond flour
  • 2 tsp Five-spice powder
  • 2 tbsp Soy sauce (low-sodium or coconut aminos for gluten-free)
  • 1 tbsp Sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp Minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp Minced shallots
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 12 large leaves Iceberg lettuce leaves (or butter lettuce)
  • 2 tbsp Neutral oil (e.g., avocado oil) for frying

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, ground chicken, egg, almond flour, five-spice powder, soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, minced shallots, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly with your hands or a spoon until evenly incorporated.

Step 2

Lay a lettuce leaf flat on a clean surface. Spoon about 2 to 3 tablespoons of the meat mixture in the center of the leaf and shape it into a log approximately 3 inches long.

Step 3

Gently roll the lettuce leaf around the meat mixture, folding the sides inward as you roll, to create a sealed meat roll. Repeat this process with the remaining meat mixture and lettuce leaves.

Step 4

Heat the neutral oil in a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium heat.

Step 5

Place the rolls seam-side down into the skillet. Fry in batches if necessary, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan.

Step 6

Cook the rolls for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until the lettuce turns lightly golden and crinkled, and the meat is cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F or 74°C).

Step 7

Transfer the cooked rolls to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Step 8

Serve warm as an appetizer or with a low-carb dipping sauce of your choice, such as a blend of soy sauce and sesame oil.
