Ingredients

  • 6 oz Tomato paste
  • 1 cup Water
  • 0.5 cup Apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Liquid smoke
  • 3 tbsp Brown sugar substitute (e.g., erythritol or allulose)
  • 1 tbsp Smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 0.5 tsp Ground cumin
  • 0.25 tsp Cayenne pepper
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.25 tsp Black pepper

Directions

Step 1

In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the tomato paste and water. Whisk until smooth over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and liquid smoke to the saucepan. Stir well to combine.

Step 3

Mix in the brown sugar substitute, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.

Step 4

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently to prevent sticking or burning.

Step 5

Lower the heat to medium-low and let the sauce cook for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly and the flavors meld together.

Step 6

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. If you like it sweeter, add a bit more brown sugar substitute; if spicier, add a pinch more cayenne pepper.

Step 7

Remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool to room temperature. It will thicken further as it cools.

Step 8

Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to one week. Serve as desired!
