Ingredients

  • 1 sheet Ready-rolled puff pastry
  • 2 tablespoons Marmite
  • 100 grams Cheddar cheese, finely grated
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame seeds
  • 1 large Egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon Plain flour (for dusting)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan) or 400°F. Line a large baking tray with parchment paper.

Step 2

Lightly dust a clean work surface with plain flour to prevent the puff pastry from sticking.

Step 3

Unroll the puff pastry sheet and place it flat on the floured surface.

Step 4

Using the back of a spoon, gently spread an even layer of Marmite across one half of the puff pastry sheet. Adjust the quantity of Marmite to taste, as it has a strong flavor.

Step 5

Sprinkle half of the grated cheddar cheese evenly over the Marmite-covered half of the pastry.

Step 6

Fold the uncovered half of the pastry over the Marmite and cheese side, pressing gently to seal.

Step 7

Brush the top of the folded pastry with the beaten egg to create a golden crust once baked.

Step 8

Evenly sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese and sesame seeds over the top, pressing lightly to help them stick.

Step 9

Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, slice the pastry into strips approximately 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) wide.

Step 10

Take each strip, hold both ends, and twist gently several times to create a spiral shape. Place the twisted strips onto the prepared baking tray, leaving enough space between them to allow for puffing during baking.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese straws are golden brown and crispy.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and let the straws cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature for the best texture and flavor.
