Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1.25 cups warm water
  • 3 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 0.5 cup honey
  • 0.25 cup water (for syrup)
  • 1 teaspoons ground cinnamon (optional for garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped nuts (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, instant yeast, granulated sugar, and salt.

Step 2

Gradually add the warm water into the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon until a smooth and sticky dough forms. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until it doubles in size.

Step 3

While the dough is rising, prepare the honey syrup. In a small saucepan, combine the honey and 1/4 cup of water. Heat over medium-low heat until the honey is dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough into it—if it sizzles and floats to the top, the oil is ready.

Step 5

Once the dough has risen, use a spoon or your fingers to drop small scoops of dough (about 1 tablespoon each) into the hot oil. Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.

Step 6

Fry the loukoumades for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Step 7

Once all the loukoumades are fried, transfer them to a serving plate. Drizzle the warm honey syrup generously over the dumplings.

Step 8

Optionally, garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon and chopped nuts for added flavor and crunch.

Step 9

Serve the loukoumades warm and enjoy!
