Ingredients

  • 250 grams all-purpose flour
  • 7 grams instant yeast
  • 10 grams sugar
  • 250 milliliters lukewarm water
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 500 milliliters vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 100 milliliters honey
  • 25 milliliters water (for syrup)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 50 grams crushed walnuts (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, instant yeast, sugar, and a pinch of salt.

Step 2

Slowly add the lukewarm water while stirring continuously to form a smooth, sticky batter. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel and let it proof in a warm place for 60 minutes, or until the dough doubles in size.

Step 3

While the dough is proofing, prepare the honey syrup by combining the honey and 25 milliliters of water in a small saucepan. Heat over low-medium heat until fully combined, then remove from heat and set aside.

Step 4

When the batter has risen, heat the vegetable oil in a deep saucepan or pot over medium-high heat. The oil should be around 170–180°C (340–360°F) for frying.

Step 5

Using a wet spoon or your hands, scoop small portions of the sticky batter (approximately the size of a walnut) and gently drop them into the hot oil. Fry in batches, ensuring the loukoumades don't overcrowd the pot.

Step 6

Cook the loukoumades for 2–3 minutes per batch, turning them frequently with a slotted spoon until they are golden and puffed. Remove from the oil and let them drain on paper towels.

Step 7

When all the loukoumades are fried, pour the warm honey syrup over them. Toss to coat evenly.

Step 8

Sprinkle with ground cinnamon and, if desired, crushed walnuts for added texture and flavor.

Step 9

Serve warm and enjoy these delightful Greek honey balls with friends and family!
