Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely diced
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 whole bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes, until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook until browned, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease if necessary.

Step 5

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water.

Step 6

Add the sugar, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix well to combine.

Step 7

Place the bay leaf into the sauce. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 1 to 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.

Step 8

Remove the bay leaf before serving.

Step 9

Serve the sauce over your favorite cooked pasta and garnish with fresh parsley. Enjoy!
