Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Pork shoulder or pork loin
  • 0.25 cup Soy sauce
  • 0.25 cup Hoisin sauce
  • 3 tbsp Honey
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
  • 2 cloves Minced garlic
  • 1 tbsp Grated ginger
  • 1 tbsp Dark soy sauce (optional for color)
  • 1 tsp Sesame oil
  • 3 drops Red food coloring (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp Hot water (to thin glaze)

Directions

Step 1

Cut the pork shoulder or pork loin into long strips, approximately 2 inches wide and 1 inch thick.

Step 2

In a bowl, mix soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, sugar, Chinese five-spice powder, minced garlic, grated ginger, dark soy sauce (if using), sesame oil, and red food coloring (if desired). Stir until well combined.

Step 3

Place the pork strips in a large resealable plastic bag or shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the pork, ensuring all pieces are well coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, for maximum flavor.

Step 4

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and set a wire rack on top. Lightly oil the rack to prevent sticking.

Step 5

Remove the pork from the marinade and place the strips on the prepared rack. Reserve the marinade for basting.

Step 6

Roast the pork in the oven for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, transfer the leftover marinade to a small saucepan. Add the vegetable oil and hot water, then simmer for 5 minutes over low heat to create a glaze.

Step 7

After 20 minutes, brush the pork with the prepared glaze. Turn the pork pieces over and brush the other side as well. Return to the oven and cook for an additional 20 minutes, basting once more halfway through.

Step 8

Optional: For a slightly charred finish, switch the oven to broil for the last 2-3 minutes. Keep a close eye to avoid burning.

Step 9

Remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Slice into thin pieces and serve with steamed rice, noodles, or vegetables.
