Ingredients

  • 1 head Green cabbage
  • 0.5 pound Ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Ground pork
  • 1 cup Cooked white rice
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Paprika
  • 28 ounce Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 cup Chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil

Directions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Core the head of cabbage and carefully remove the outer leaves. Blanch the leaves in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, or until pliable. Transfer the leaves to a plate to cool.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix until thoroughly combined.

Step 3

Lay one cabbage leaf on a flat surface. Place about 2-3 tablespoons of the meat mixture in the center of the leaf. Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling, then roll from the bottom to create a tight roll. Repeat with the remaining filling and leaves.

Step 4

In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the canned crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, chicken broth, brown sugar, and lemon juice, stirring to combine. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

Step 5

Nestle the cabbage rolls seam-side down into the tomato sauce in the pot. Ensure the rolls are snug, but not overcrowded. Spoon some sauce over the top of the rolls.

Step 6

Cover the pot and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 1.5 hours, occasionally spooning sauce over the rolls to ensure they remain moist.

Step 7

Once cooked, remove the cabbage rolls from the pot carefully. Serve hot with extra sauce on top.
