Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 2 large Yellow onions
  • 3 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup Beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 4 slices Provolone cheese
  • 4 whole Burger buns
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.25 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil

Directions

Step 1

Peel the yellow onions and slice them thinly into rings.

Step 2

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions along with a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until the onions are caramelized and golden-brown.

Step 3

Push the onions to one side of the skillet. Add the olive oil to the empty side and let it heat up. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.

Step 4

Season the beef with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine with the caramelized onions, and cook until the beef is browned and fully cooked, about 7-8 minutes.

Step 5

Sprinkle the flour over the beef and onion mixture. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to eliminate any raw flour taste.

Step 6

Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Simmer for 3-5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly and becomes saucy.

Step 7

Toast the burger buns under a broiler or in a toaster oven as desired.

Step 8

Place a slice of provolone cheese on top of the beef mixture in the skillet. Cover with a lid or foil for 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts.

Step 9

Spoon the loose sloppy French onion beef mixture onto the bottom half of each toasted bun.

Step 10

Top with the other half of the buns and serve immediately.
