Ingredients

  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Instant yeast
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons Heavy cream

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, salt, and instant yeast.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, warm the milk and butter over low heat until the butter is just melted. Let cool to lukewarm (about 110°F).

Step 3

Add the milk mixture and eggs to the dry ingredients. Stir until the dough starts to come together, then knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough becomes soft and elastic.

Step 4

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free area for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 5

Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.

Step 6

Cut the dough into rectangles approximately 4 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. Place the rectangles on a parchment-lined baking sheet and cover loosely with plastic wrap. Let rise for another 30 minutes.

Step 7

In a large, deep pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F. Carefully fry the dough rectangles 2-3 at a time, about 1 minute per side, or until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to transfer to a paper towel-lined tray to cool slightly.

Step 8

To make the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream until smooth. Adjust consistency with more cream or powdered sugar if needed.

Step 9

Dip the slightly cooled Long Johns into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off. Place them on a wire rack to set for about 10 minutes before serving.

Step 10

Serve fresh and enjoy your homemade Long Johns!
