Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups white rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Directions

Step 1

First, rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Then, add the 2 cups of rice and 4 cups of water to a pot. Bring it to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked. Set aside and keep warm.

Step 2

While the rice is cooking, peel and finely chop the onion and garlic. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon salt, and 0.5 teaspoon black pepper. Mix until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.

Step 3

Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 4

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and melt. Once melted, add the beef patties to the skillet. Cook each side for about 4-5 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

Step 5

In the same skillet, pour off any excess fat, leaving about 1-2 tablespoons in the skillet for the gravy.

Step 6

Reduce the heat to medium-low and add 2 cups of beef broth to the skillet. In a separate small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water until smooth. Slowly add the cornstarch mixture to the broth, whisking constantly. Continue to cook the gravy until it thickens, approximately 5 minutes.

Step 7

In another skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Crack the eggs into the skillet and fry them until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny, or to your preferred doneness.

Step 8

To assemble the loco moco, scoop a portion of rice onto each serving plate. Top each rice mound with a beef patty and then a fried egg. Generously pour the prepared gravy over the top.

Step 9

Serve immediately while hot and enjoy your homemade loco moco!
