Ingredients

  • 750 ml Red wine (dry or semi-dry)
  • 1 whole Orange
  • 1 whole Lemon
  • 2 sticks Cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole Cloves
  • 2 whole Star anise
  • 3 tablespoons Honey or brown sugar
  • 120 ml Water
  • 60 ml Brandy (optional)

Directions

Step 1

1. Slice the orange and lemon into thin rounds, leaving the peel on, and set aside.

Step 2

2. In a medium-sized saucepan, add the water, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat and let the spices infuse for about 5 minutes.

Step 3

3. Reduce the heat to low and pour in the red wine. Add the orange and lemon slices to the saucepan.

Step 4

4. Stir in the honey or brown sugar, adjusting sweetness to taste. Stir gently until dissolved.

Step 5

5. Allow the wine to heat gradually on low heat for about 15 minutes. Do not let the mixture boil, as this will burn off the alcohol.

Step 6

6. Taste the wine and adjust the seasoning if necessary. For a stronger kick, stir in the optional brandy at this point.

Step 7

7. Use a fine mesh strainer to remove the spices and fruit slices before serving, or ladle the wine carefully into mugs, leaving the larger pieces behind.

Step 8

8. Serve warm, garnished with a slice of orange or a cinnamon stick, if desired.
