Ingredients

  • 10 large Russet potatoes
  • 8 slices Bacon
  • 1 large Onion
  • 6 large Eggs
  • 2 cups Whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

Step 2

Peel and grate the potatoes using a box grater or a food processor. Place the grated potatoes in a large bowl and press out excess liquid using a clean kitchen towel. Set aside.

Step 3

Dice the bacon and cook it in a large skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon, leaving the rendered fat in the skillet.

Step 4

Finely chop the onion and sauté it in the bacon fat until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Remove the skillet from heat.

Step 5

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, melted butter, salt, and black pepper.

Step 6

Stir in the flour to the egg mixture and mix well to combine. This will help thicken the kugelis.

Step 7

Combine the grated potatoes, cooked bacon, sautéed onion (including the bacon fat), and the egg mixture. Mix everything thoroughly to ensure an even distribution.

Step 8

Pour the potato mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the kugelis is set in the center.

Step 10

Remove the kugelis from the oven and allow it to rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy this traditional Lithuanian dish with sour cream or apple sauce on the side if desired.
