Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Ground Italian sausage
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces Crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces Tomato sauce
  • 6 ounces Tomato paste
  • 0.5 cup Beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Dried basil
  • 2 teaspoons Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 whole Bay leaf

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage until fully cooked, breaking it up into small crumbles as it cooks. Drain excess grease.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the cooked meat. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and the garlic is fragrant. Remove from heat.

Step 3

In the base of a slow cooker, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and beef broth. Stir to combine.

Step 4

Add the cooked meat-and-onion mixture to the slow cooker and mix well.

Step 5

Stir in the sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes, if using. Place the bay leaf in the sauce.

Step 6

Cover the slow cooker with the lid and set it to low heat. Cook for 6 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 7

Once the sauce has finished cooking, remove the bay leaf and taste for seasoning. Adjust with additional salt or pepper if needed.

Step 8

Serve the sauce over cooked spaghetti, or your favorite pasta, and enjoy!
