Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 1 pound Ground pork
  • 1 medium-sized head White cabbage
  • 1 cup White rice
  • 1 large Yellow onion
  • 3 pieces Garlic cloves
  • 28 ounces Canned diced tomatoes
  • 16 ounces Tomato sauce
  • 2 cups Beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon Dried thyme
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Cook the rice according to package instructions and set aside.

Step 3

Finely chop the onion and garlic. Cut the cabbage into bite-sized pieces.

Step 4

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, sautéing until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 5

Add ground beef and pork to the skillet. Cook until browned and crumbled, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Step 6

Stir in salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme to the meat mixture. Remove from heat.

Step 7

In a large mixing bowl, combine the meat mixture with the cooked rice.

Step 8

Spread a layer of chopped cabbage in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 9

Top the cabbage layer with half of the meat and rice mixture.

Step 10

Pour half of the diced tomatoes and tomato sauce evenly over the meat mixture.

Step 11

Repeat with a second layer of cabbage, followed by the remaining meat mixture and tomato sauce.

Step 12

Pour the beef broth evenly over the dish to ensure the casserole stays moist.

Step 13

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

Step 14

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes to slightly crisp up the top layer.

Step 15

Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Optional: sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese before serving.
