Ingredients

  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Yellow cornmeal
  • 3 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 ounces Cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon Honey (optional for added sweetness)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, yellow cornmeal, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

In a medium bowl, beat the egg. Add the milk, melted butter, and cream cheese, and whisk until smooth. You may see small bits of cream cheese that have not fully broken down; this is okay.

Step 4

If using honey, whisk it into the wet ingredients until fully incorporated.

Step 5

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients. Gently mix until just combined; do not overmix. The batter will be slightly lumpy, and that's normal.

Step 6

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it out evenly with a spatula.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 8

Remove the pan from the oven and let the cornbread cool for 5-10 minutes before cutting into squares and serving warm.
