Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.75 cup Unsalted butter (cold, diced)
  • 1 cup Buttermilk (cold)
  • 2 tablespoons Melted butter (for brushing, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt to evenly distribute the dry ingredients.

Step 3

Add the cold, diced unsalted butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized chunks of butter remaining.

Step 4

Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the cold buttermilk. Gently fold the flour and buttermilk together using a wooden spoon or spatula, being careful not to overmix. The dough should just come together and will be slightly sticky.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat the dough into a rectangle about 1 inch thick. Fold the dough in half, turn it 90 degrees, and pat it out again into a 1-inch-thick rectangle. Repeat this folding and turning process 3 to 4 times to create layers, which help the biscuits rise.

Step 6

After the final fold, pat the dough out to a 1-inch thickness. Use a round biscuit cutter (about 2.5 inches in diameter) to cut out biscuits, pressing straight down without twisting to ensure a clean cut. Re-roll the scraps as needed to make additional biscuits.

Step 7

Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are touching each other for better rise or spaced slightly apart if you prefer crustier edges.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.

Step 9

Optional: For extra flavor, brush the tops of the hot biscuits with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven.

Step 10

Serve warm with your favorite toppings, such as butter, honey, or jam. Enjoy!
