Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoons chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter (optional, for toasting buns)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it into small pieces with a wooden spoon, until browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess grease if needed.

Step 3

Push the browned beef to one side of the skillet and add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the other side. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 4-5 minutes, then stir them into the beef.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to medium-low and stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.

Step 5

Pour in the water and stir everything together until well combined.

Step 6

Simmer the mixture for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 7

While the meat mixture simmers, optionally butter the hamburger buns and toast them in a skillet or under a broiler until golden brown.

Step 8

Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, then place the top half on to close. Serve immediately.
