Ingredients

  • 6 cups (cubed) Day-old bread (French or brioche)
  • 2 cups Whole milk
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 4 large Eggs
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter (melted)
  • 0.25 cup Lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon zest (from 2 lemons)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar (for sauce)
  • 0.25 cup Water (for sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon juice (for sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter (for sauce)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 2

Place the cubed bread into the greased baking dish, arranging it evenly.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, and sugar until the sugar is dissolved.

Step 4

Add the eggs, melted butter, lemon juice, lemon zest, vanilla extract, and salt to the milk mixture. Mix thoroughly until smooth.

Step 5

Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to ensure all the bread is soaked.

Step 6

Let the mixture rest for 10-15 minutes to fully absorb the custard.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the pudding is set. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.

Step 8

While the bread pudding is baking, prepare the lemon sauce: In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of water over medium heat. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.

Step 9

Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter to the saucepan. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce is slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Step 10

Once the bread pudding is done, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool for 5-10 minutes.

Step 11

Drizzle the warm lemon sauce over the bread pudding just before serving.

Step 12

Serve warm and enjoy the bright, citrusy flavors of this comforting dessert!
