Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 500 grams beef stew meat (or lamb, cubed)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 400 grams canned diced tomatoes (or fresh, finely chopped)
  • 2 cups frozen green peas
  • 2 cups water or beef stock
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the cubed beef or lamb to the pot and brown on all sides, about 5–7 minutes. Remove and set aside.

Step 3

In the same pot, add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the tomato paste to the pot and stir well, cooking for 1–2 minutes to deepen its flavor.

Step 6

Return the browned meat to the pot and stir to combine.

Step 7

Pour in the canned diced tomatoes and water (or beef stock). Stir well and bring the mixture to a boil.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 40 minutes, or until the meat is tender.

Step 9

Add the frozen green peas to the pot and stir in the allspice, cinnamon, black pepper, and salt.

Step 10

Cover again and cook for another 10 minutes, or until the peas are tender and the flavors have melded together.

Step 11

Taste and adjust seasonings as desired.

Step 12

Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, if desired, and serve hot with a side of rice or crusty bread.
