Ingredients

  • 16 oz seitan
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 2 cups neutral cooking oil (e.g., vegetable oil)
  • 0.25 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp sriracha (or preferred hot sauce)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 2 tsp cornstarch (for slurry)
  • 2 tbsp water (for slurry)
  • 2 tbsp scallions, chopped
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds

Directions

Step 1

Slice the seitan into bite-sized pieces and pat dry with a paper towel to remove excess liquid.

Step 2

In a large bowl, toss the seitan pieces in 1 cup of cornstarch until evenly coated. Shake off any excess.

Step 3

Heat the neutral cooking oil in a deep skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot (about 350°F), fry the seitan in batches until golden and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

Step 4

In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, sriracha, garlic, ginger, and 1/2 cup of water to create the sauce.

Step 5

In a separate small bowl, mix 2 teaspoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to form a slurry. Set aside.

Step 6

In a clean skillet or wok, pour the prepared sauce mixture and bring it to a simmer over medium heat.

Step 7

Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook the sauce, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 8

Add the fried seitan to the skillet with the sauce and toss to coat evenly.

Step 9

Garnish with chopped scallions and sesame seeds before serving.

Step 10

Serve hot with steamed rice or your favorite vegetables. Enjoy!
