Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons Ground ginger
  • 1.5 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground cloves
  • 2 teaspoons Baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 cups Unsalted butter, softened
  • 0.5 cups Brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 piece Large egg
  • 0.75 cups Molasses
  • 1 cups Boiling water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a square 9x9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes using a hand or stand mixer on medium speed.

Step 4

Add the egg to the butter mixture and beat until well incorporated. Pour in the molasses and mix until smooth.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, a little at a time, alternating with the boiling water. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, stirring just until combined between additions.

Step 6

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it out evenly.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 8

Let the gingerbread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or with a dollop of whipped cream!
