Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 0.5 lb Italian sausage
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 large Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 oz Crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz Tomato paste
  • 15 oz Tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp Granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp Dried basil
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 15 oz Ricotta cheese
  • 1 large Egg
  • 0.75 cup Grated Parmesan cheese
  • 12 sheets Lasagna noodles
  • 16 oz Mozzarella cheese, shredded

Directions

Step 1

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking them up into small pieces with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess grease.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring often, until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Step 3

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato sauce. Add sugar, basil, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 4

While the sauce simmers, prepare the ricotta mixture. In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, half of the grated Parmesan cheese, and chopped parsley. Mix well and set aside.

Step 5

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Boil a large pot of salted water and cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set them aside on a clean towel to avoid sticking.

Step 6

Spread 1 cup of the meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Layer 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping them.

Step 7

Spread one-third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by 1 1/2 cups of the meat sauce. Sprinkle 1 1/3 cups of shredded mozzarella over the sauce.

Step 8

Repeat the layers two more times: noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella. For the final layer, top with remaining meat sauce and sprinkle the rest of the Parmesan cheese on top.

Step 9

Cover the baking dish with foil, ensuring the foil does not touch the cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Step 10

Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling.

Step 11

Let the lasagna rest for 15-20 minutes before slicing and serving.
