Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.33 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter, melted (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 3 tablespoons whole milk (for frosting)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 3

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 4

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Step 6

Scoop tablespoons of the cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the cookies are set but still soft in the center.

Step 8

Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Step 9

To make the frosting, whisk together the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, melted butter, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth and creamy. Adjust the consistency by adding more powdered sugar or milk, if needed.

Step 10

Once the cookies are completely cooled, spread the frosting generously over the tops of each cookie using a small spatula or the back of a spoon.

Step 11

Allow the frosting to set for 15-20 minutes before serving. Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
