Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground lamb
  • 0.5 cups breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 0.25 teaspoons red chili flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 400 grams crushed tomatoes
  • 0.5 cups heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon red chili paste
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh basil leaves, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 5 minutes until the breadcrumbs soak up the liquid.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground lamb, soaked breadcrumbs, egg, 2 minced garlic cloves, parsley, ground cumin, ground coriander, red chili flakes, 1 teaspoon salt, and 0.5 teaspoon black pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Step 4

Form the lamb mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter, and place them on the prepared baking sheet. You should have about 18-20 meatballs.

Step 5

Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until browned and cooked through.

Step 6

Meanwhile, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Step 7

Add the remaining minced garlic clove and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 8

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, red chili paste, smoked paprika, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Simmer the sauce for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to let the flavors meld together.

Step 9

Reduce the heat to low and stir in the heavy cream. Simmer for another 2-3 minutes, then add the fresh basil leaves.

Step 10

Once the meatballs are ready, transfer them to the skillet with the tomato cream sauce, gently tossing to coat them evenly.

Step 11

Serve the lamb meatballs with spicy tomato cream sauce hot, garnished with extra chopped parsley if desired. Pair with your choice of pasta, rice, or crusty bread.
