Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 0.5 lb Ground pork
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 large Egg
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 28 oz Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Dried basil
  • 12 oz Spaghetti
  • 4 quarts Water
  • 1 tbsp Salt
  • 4 leaves Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)
  • 2 tbsp Extra Parmesan cheese, grated (optional, for serving)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, 2 cloves of minced garlic, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Step 2

Roll the mixture into 1 to 1.5-inch meatballs and place them on a plate or tray. You should yield about 16-18 meatballs.

Step 3

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the meatballs in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Sear the meatballs until browned on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the meatballs and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the remaining clove of minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, and dried basil. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Step 5

Bring the sauce to a simmer, then return the seared meatballs to the skillet. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the meatballs cook in the sauce for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

While the meatballs are cooking, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot. Add 1 tablespoon of salt, then add the spaghetti. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain the pasta and set aside.

Step 7

Once the meatballs are fully cooked and tender, taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed.

Step 8

Serve the spaghetti topped with the meatballs and marinara sauce. Garnish with fresh basil leaves and extra grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.
