Ingredients

  • 1 head green cabbage
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 3 pieces garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons red chili flakes (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Remove any damaged outer leaves from the cabbage, cut it in half, and remove the core. Thinly slice the cabbage into shreds and set aside.

Step 2

Peel and thinly slice the onion into half-moons. Mince the garlic cloves.

Step 3

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat.

Step 4

Add the sliced onion to the skillet and sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized, stirring occasionally.

Step 5

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 1 minute, stirring constantly to avoid burning.

Step 6

Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet and toss to combine with the onions and garlic. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the cabbage is softened and begins to lightly brown.

Step 7

In a small bowl, mix the balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, and brown sugar until the sugar dissolves.

Step 8

Pour the balsamic mixture over the cabbage and stir well to coat. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 9

Season with black pepper, salt, and optional red chili flakes to taste, stirring well. Adjust seasoning as needed.

Step 10

Remove from heat and serve hot as a flavorful side dish or a light main course. Enjoy!
