Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium Green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 0.75 cup Ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.25 cup Chicken or beef broth
  • 4 pieces Hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (optional, for toasting buns)

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it up into small pieces with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat and set aside.

Step 2

In the same skillet, add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are soft and fragrant.

Step 3

Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet and stir to combine with the vegetables.

Step 4

Add the ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.

Step 5

Pour in the chicken or beef broth and reduce the heat to low. Simmer the mixture for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 6

While the Sloppy Joe mixture is simmering, optionally toast the hamburger buns. Spread butter on the cut sides of the buns and place them on a hot skillet or griddle, cut side down, until golden brown.

Step 7

Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Place the tops of the buns on and serve immediately.

Step 8

Serve with your favorite side dishes, such as coleslaw, potato chips, or a simple salad, for a complete meal.
