Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Ground beef
  • 1 large, chopped Onion
  • 4 cups, drained Sauerkraut
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) Active dry yeast
  • 1.25 cups (110°F) Warm water
  • 1 teaspoon Salt (for dough)
  • 2 tablespoons, melted Butter
  • 3 tablespoons, optional for brushing Milk

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté the ground beef until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the sauerkraut, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Cook for 5 more minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Step 4

In the meantime, prepare the dough. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 packet active dry yeast, and 1 1/4 cups warm water. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.

Step 5

Stir in 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 2 tablespoons melted butter. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 7

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

Step 8

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll out each portion into a circle about 5 inches in diameter.

Step 9

Place 3-4 tablespoons of the beef and sauerkraut mixture in the center of each dough circle. Fold up the edges and pinch them together to seal, forming a bun shape.

Step 10

Place the sealed buns seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Optionally, brush the tops with milk for a glossy finish.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the buns are golden brown.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your homemade Kraut Burgers!
