Ingredients

  • 250 grams ground beef
  • 250 grams ground pork
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 60 grams breadcrumbs
  • 120 ml whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 480 ml beef broth
  • 120 ml heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let them soak for 5 minutes until the breadcrumbs absorb the milk.

Step 2

Add the ground beef, ground pork, finely chopped onion, egg, ground allspice, ground nutmeg, salt, and black pepper to the breadcrumb mixture. Mix everything together with your hands or a spoon until well combined, but do not overmix.

Step 3

Using damp hands, shape the mixture into small meatballs, roughly 2.5 cm (1 inch) in diameter. Place them on a plate or tray.

Step 4

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are browned on all sides and cooked through. Remove the cooked meatballs and set them aside.

Step 5

To make the gravy, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter to the same skillet and melt it over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned.

Step 6

Gradually whisk in the beef broth, making sure no lumps form. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes until thickened.

Step 7

Stir in the heavy cream, Dijon mustard, and soy sauce. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes while stirring, until the sauce is creamy and smooth.

Step 8

Return the cooked meatballs to the skillet, coating them in the sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 9

Serve the Swedish meatballs warm, traditionally with mashed potatoes or lingonberry jam on the side. Enjoy!
