Ingredients

  • 240 g all-purpose flour
  • 200 g granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 120 ml unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 450 g apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 60 g chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 30 g powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch (20 cm) square or round cake pan, or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, ground cinnamon, salt, and ground nutmeg until well combined.

Step 3

In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth and well incorporated.

Step 4

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and fold them together using a spatula. The batter will be thick.

Step 5

Gently fold in the diced apples and, if using, the chopped walnuts or pecans. Ensure the apples are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Step 6

Transfer the batter to the prepared cake pan, spreading it into an even layer.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Step 8

Let the cake cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 9

Once cooled, dust the top with powdered sugar, if desired. Slice and serve.
