Ingredients

  • 16 oz penne pasta
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium (diced) yellow onion
  • 3 cloves (minced) garlic
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup (grated) Parmesan cheese
  • 0.25 cup (chopped) fresh basil
  • 1 tsp (adjust to taste) salt
  • 0.5 tsp (adjust to taste) black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 8 cups (for boiling pasta) water
  • 1 tbsp salt (for pasta water)

Directions

Step 1

Bring 8 cups of water to a boil in a large pot. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water.

Step 2

Cook the penne pasta according to the package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.

Step 3

While the pasta is cooking, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 4

Add diced onion to the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes, or until the onion becomes translucent.

Step 5

Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, being careful not to let it burn.

Step 6

Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and no pink remains, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 7

Season the cooked beef with 1 teaspoon of salt, 0.5 teaspoon of black pepper, and 0.25 teaspoon of red pepper flakes.

Step 8

Stir in the crushed tomatoes and 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Step 9

Reduce the heat to low and stir in 1 cup of heavy cream. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce becomes creamy and well combined.

Step 10

Add the cooked pasta to the sauce and toss to coat evenly.

Step 11

Stir in 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese until melted and fully incorporated into the dish.

Step 12

Sprinkle chopped fresh basil over the pasta, then taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Step 13

Serve warm and garnish with additional grated Parmesan cheese and a sprig of basil if desired.
