Ingredients

  • 1 pound Lean ground beef
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Beef broth
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 3 large Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1.5 cups Shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Butter

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula. Drain any excess grease.

Step 3

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the ground beef. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion is softened.

Step 4

Season the beef mixture with salt, black pepper, and dried thyme. Stir to combine.

Step 5

Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir well to coat. Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps, then add the milk. Cook for 4-5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat.

Step 6

Layer half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spread half of the beef mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle with half of the shredded cheddar cheese.

Step 7

Repeat with the remaining potatoes and beef mixture, finishing with the remaining shredded cheese on top.

Step 8

Sprinkle the paprika over the cheese for added color and flavor.

Step 9

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.

Step 10

After 40 minutes, remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 11

Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
