Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup Milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1 large Yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz Button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into oval patties about 1/2-inch thick.

Step 3

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. (They do not need to be fully cooked at this stage.)

Step 4

In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook, stirring often, for about 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are softened and the mushrooms are browned.

Step 5

Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, until lightly golden and no raw flour remains.

Step 6

Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Add the soy sauce and stir to combine.

Step 7

Return the patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.

Step 8

Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper, if needed.

Step 9

Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, topped with the mushroom and onion gravy. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired. Pair with mashed potatoes or rice for a complete meal.
