Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 0.5 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal portions and shape into oval patties about ½ inch thick.

Step 3

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until nicely browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add butter and sliced mushrooms. Cook over medium heat until the mushrooms are browned and tender, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Pour the beef broth into the skillet and scrape the bottom to deglaze, incorporating any browned bits. Let the mixture simmer for 1-2 minutes.

Step 6

In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water to make a slurry. Gradually stir the slurry into the skillet with the beef broth and mushrooms, cooking until the gravy thickens.

Step 7

Return the browned patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the patties to cook through.

Step 8

Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles, and garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
