Ingredients

  • 16 ounces dried split peas
  • 1 ham bone
  • 2 large carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced

  • 8 cups chicken broth
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 cup cooked ham, diced (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Sort through the dried split peas to remove any debris, then rinse them thoroughly under cold water and set aside.

If using a crock pot, add the rinsed split peas, ham bone, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, potatoes, chicken broth, bay leaf, thyme, parsley, salt, and pepper to the crock pot. Stir to combine.

If using the stove top, combine all the same ingredients in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Stir well.
