Ingredients

  • 4 medium-sized fresh yams (sweet potatoes)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 cups brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups marshmallows (optional, for topping)
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Peel the yams and slice them into 1/2-inch thick rounds.

Step 3

In a large pot, bring water to a boil, and add the yam slices. Boil for 8-10 minutes, or until just fork-tender. Drain and set aside.

Step 4

In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla extract. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the mixture becomes smooth and syrupy, then remove from heat.

Step 5

Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Arrange half of the yam slices in a single overlapping layer in the bottom of the dish.

Step 6

Drizzle half of the butter-sugar mixture evenly over the yam layer.

Step 7

Add the remaining yam slices on top, forming a second layer, and pour the remaining butter-sugar mixture evenly over this layer.

Step 8

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.

Step 9

Remove the foil and, if desired, sprinkle marshmallows over the top. Return the dish to the oven and bake uncovered for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the marshmallows are golden and gooey (if using).

Step 10

Remove from the oven, let cool for 5 minutes, and serve warm. Enjoy this decadent side dish!
