Ingredients

  • 1 head Green cabbage
  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Ground pork
  • 1 cup Cooked white rice
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 28 ounces Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces Tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Core the cabbage and carefully peel off 10-12 large leaves. Blanch the leaves in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes until softened. Drain and set aside to cool.

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix well to form the filling.

Step 3

Lay one cabbage leaf on a clean surface. Place about 2-3 tablespoons of the filling in the center of the leaf. Fold in the sides and roll tightly to form a neat roll. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.

Step 4

In a medium bowl, whisk together the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice, and water to make the tomato sauce.

Step 5

Heat the vegetable oil in a large oven-safe pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down in a single layer in the pot. Pour the tomato sauce evenly over the rolls, ensuring they are completely covered.

Step 6

Bring the pot to a light simmer on the stovetop, then cover and transfer to a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven. Bake for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is fully cooked.

Step 7

Serve the cabbage rolls hot, spooned with extra sauce from the pot. Enjoy this hearty and flavorful meal!
