Ingredients

  • 1 whole Turkey (10-14 lbs)
  • 1 cup Butter (unsalted, softened)
  • 2 tablespoons Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Black pepper (freshly ground)
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 whole Onion (quartered)
  • 1 whole Carrot (peeled and chopped)
  • 2 stalks Celery (chopped)
  • 1 piece Brown paper grocery bag (food-safe)
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 roll Kitchen string

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Make sure the oven rack is in the lower third of the oven to accommodate the size of the turkey.

Step 2

Remove the turkey from its packaging and discard any giblets or neck pieces from the cavity. Pat the turkey dry with paper towels.

Step 3

In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika to create a flavored butter mixture.

Step 4

Gently separate the turkey’s skin from the meat around the breasts using your fingers. Take care not to tear the skin.

Step 5

Rub the flavored butter mixture generously under the skin, making sure to coat the breasts evenly. Rub any remaining butter on the outside of the turkey.

Step 6

Stuff the turkey cavity with the quartered onion, chopped carrot, and celery. Tie the legs together with kitchen string to secure the cavity.

Step 7

Rub olive oil on the outside of the turkey to encourage even browning.

Step 8

Place the turkey inside the brown paper grocery bag. Fold the open end of the bag to tightly seal the turkey inside.

Step 9

Position the bagged turkey on a roasting rack inside a roasting pan, ensuring the bag does not touch the sides or top of the oven.

Step 10

Roast the turkey at 375°F (190°C) for 15 minutes per pound. For example, a 12-pound turkey would cook for around 3 hours.

Step 11

During the roasting process, the bag will darken. This is normal, and the bag should not burn provided it does not touch the oven's heating elements.

Step 12

Once the cooking time is complete, remove the turkey from the oven and carefully cut open the bag. Be cautious of hot steam escaping.

Step 13

Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the turkey breast. The internal temperature should read 165°F (74°C) to ensure it is safely cooked.

Step 14

Let the turkey rest for 20-30 minutes before carving to allow the juices to redistribute. Serve and enjoy!
