Ingredients

  • 1 pound pork shoulder
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce (keto-friendly)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 inch piece ginger
  • 2 tablespoons erythritol
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1 drop red food coloring (optional)
  • 2 scallions

Directions

Step 1

Start by preparing the marinade. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the soy sauce, keto-friendly hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, finely chopped ginger, erythritol, and five-spice powder. Mix well.

Step 2

If using, add a drop of red food coloring to the marinade to give the pork the traditional red hue.

Step 3

Cut the pork shoulder into strips about 1.5 inches wide. Place the pork in a resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish and pour the marinade over it.

Step 4

Ensure the pork is well coated with the marinade. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, allowing the flavors to meld.

Step 5

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) when ready to cook. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top.

Step 6

Remove the pork from the marinade, saving the marinade for later use. Arrange the pork strips on the wire rack.

Step 7

Bake the pork for about 30 minutes, then brush the reserved marinade over the pork.

Step 8

Increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C) and bake for another 15-20 minutes or until the pork is glazed and slightly charred, occasionally basting with the marinade.

Step 9

Once cooked, remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Step 10

Slice the pork into thin pieces and garnish with chopped scallions before serving.

Step 11

Enjoy your keto-friendly Char Siu with cauliflower rice or stir-fried vegetables.
