Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 medium (finely chopped) Yellow onion
  • 4 minced Garlic cloves
  • 28 ounces Canned whole peeled tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil
  • 0.25 teaspoon Crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon (or to taste) Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon (freshly ground, or to taste) Black pepper
  • 6 chopped Fresh basil leaves
  • 0.25 cup Water (optional for thinning)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the finely chopped onion to the pan and sauté for about 5-7 minutes, or until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, being careful not to burn the garlic.

Step 4

Pour the canned whole peeled tomatoes into the pan, breaking them up with a wooden spoon or using your hands beforehand. Add the tomato paste to the mixture.

Step 5

Stir in the sugar, dried oregano, dried basil, and crushed red pepper flakes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Step 6

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan slightly, and allow the sauce to simmer for 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 7

If the sauce becomes too thick during cooking, add a small amount of water (1-2 tablespoons at a time) to reach your desired consistency.

Step 8

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed. For a smoother consistency, you can blend the sauce using an immersion blender or a regular blender, but this step is optional.

Step 9

Stir in the freshly chopped basil leaves just before serving for a burst of fresh flavor.

Step 10

Serve warm over your favorite pasta, as a base for pizza, or with crusty bread for dipping. Enjoy!
