Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.75 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 pieces hamburger buns

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.

Step 3

Remove the cooked beef from the skillet with a slotted spoon and set it aside. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and green bell pepper. Cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened.

Step 5

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 30 seconds, just until fragrant.

Step 6

Return the cooked beef to the skillet and stir to combine.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low and add the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir well to evenly coat the beef mixture.

Step 8

Simmer the mixture over low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 9

Toast the hamburger buns lightly, if desired.

Step 10

Spoon the Sloppy Joe meat mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns. Top with the other bun halves and serve warm.
